Educational Cruises and Activities 2017 - 2019

Welcome to Moonraker Dolphin Swims and thank you for your enquire into the possibility of us hosting your school/education group out on Port Phillip Bay.

We offer a range of in-water and above water activities for students of all ages.

Our tours are conducted aboard our flagship vessel ‘Moonraker’ and led by a mix of qualified Snorkel Instructors, Surf Lifesavers and/or qualified Dive Masters who all hold current First Aid Certificates and have extensive local first hand experience in our area.

The boat our tours are conducted on is purpose built and is the largest snorkel boat here in Port Phillip Bay, we offer hot showers, refreshments, a range of areas where students are interact and chat freely to their instructors and guides, giving them the freedom to discover and learn about our environment in their own time and space.

3 hour Seals, Dolphin and Sea Dragons Snorkel

3 Hour Dolphin and Seal Swim

This exciting cruise commences with a snorkel safety briefing and time to collect and fit snorkel gear, after which we travel out into the sheltered shallows of Port Phillip Bay to embark on an exciting once in a lifetime adventure.

 

Arriving at Chinaman’s Hat, students can put their newfound skills into action; this is a local spot where the ever-curious Australian Fur Seals are waiting to share their underwater world with you. Chinaman’s Hat is a man made structure built just for the Seals! Offering shallow water snorkeling and beautiful white sand seabed, this area has a maximum depth of 4mts.

 

Once the dolphins are located we ready into groups of 10 people and prepare to enter the water, floating on the waters surface your guides will try to entice the dolphins to spend time with our group, where they swim beneath you and often circle swimmers looking at you and showing off their amazing abilities.

 

Our cruise also includes a snorkel with the Sea Dragons. These prehistoric looking sea horses are unique to our area and closely related to the famous Leafy Sea Dragons these spectacular animals are Victoria’s Marine emblem.

 

During the cruise our instructors and guides educate students on the locations visited providing a detailed commentary, which students are encouraged to interact and participate in.

This fabulous tour is designed to offer students a fun and active two hours. Students are introduced to the water at Pope’s Eye, where they are taught safe snorkeling practices in this sheltered environment.

Popes Eye is part of the Port Phillip Heads Marine Park and this area has become increasingly popular with educational activities, dive and snorkel trips due to the abundance in marine life. Students are then introduced to a population of young male Australian Fur Seals where students can swim amongst the very friendly and sometimes cheeky fur seals. This tour includes guided snorkeling groups around the park, all snorkeling gear, showers and change facilities

2 hour invasive/introduced species discovery snorkel

This tour focuses on learning and identifying some of the most common invasive and introduced species found in Port Phillip Bay.

Students will gain knowledge on this history and introduction of these species into our local marine environment, along with the impacts on our eco system. Students will also gain the skills required to identify each of the most commonly seen and often misidentified species.

Learning from qualified guides students will enter the water at Popes Eye Marine Park and discovering how these animals and plants have adapted to live within our local environment.

  • Target species: Northern Pacific Sea Star, Japanese Kelp, Green Crab or European Shore Crab, European Fan Worm

2 hour off the Beach Snorkel

This is a fabulous way of introducing students to the water and learning about our diverse eco system, whilst still improving snorkeling skills and general comfort in the water.
This tour explores the rich and diverse waters of southern Port Phillip Bay through a guided educational activity in pre selected areas rich in unique flora and flora. With a clever blend of fun, adventure and education we can tailor the snorkel to suit your students requirements.

 

Tour area: This tour is ‘off the beach’ so the depth will vary from ankle deep to 5 meters. Our guides will focus on identifying the marine animals and invertebrates whilst educating students as they snorkel.

 

Suggested locations:
Rye Pier to view sea horses, fish and plant life, and marine invertebrates;
Portsea Pier to view Sea Dragons, fish life and native seaweed varieties;
Blairgowrie Marina to view fish life, smooth back stingrays and invertebrates
All locations offer coach/bus parking and direct access to the water, bathrooms and change facilities are available onsite for students.

Tour inclusions:

  • Cost: $33 per student.
  • Duration: Half hour gear up and briefing, followed by a 1.5 hour snorkel and interpretation
  • Minimum: 20 students
  • Maximum: 50 students
  • Inclusions: Wetsuits, mask, snorkel and fins, we also include additional flotation for nervous snorkelers or students with limited swimming ability.

Experience Port Phillip Bay from the surface and explore our diverse array of native marine life and our rich history.

 

Departing from Sorrento Pier, we are in search of Australian Fur Seals, resident Bottle Nose Dolphins, Australasian Gannets or Shy Albatross. Cruising along Point Nepean revealing the historic Quarantine Station, Fort Nepean and The Rip. This tour can be tailored to match students current learning program and provide interpretation and education on a wide range of topics.
